“Rationalization is a process of not perceiving reality, but of attempting to make reality fit one’s emotions.”
– Ayn Rand, Philosophy: Who Needs It?
A psychological cover-up yet needed by our self-deflating sense of self when we feel low in the midst of unacceptable situations. The most popular tools of rationalization are philosophical catch phrases.
When do you quote, repeat and perpetuate certain phrases to yourself ? The moment you feel the desperation to justify feelings which you’re otherwise unwilling to acknowledge.
I found something really interesting in this observation as it just tells you bluntly that you love to cling onto some inspiring self-proclaimed phrases that seem sootbing but only are self-created illusions.
Ayn Rand also says “Nobody is perfect in this world” is a rationalization for the desire to continue indulging in one’s imperfections, i.e., the desire to escape morality.
